Response:The fictional narrative has beautiful illustrations that resemble the Mexican Folk Art style among the pages. Very young readers will enjoy reading ways to see the good in everything and always have a positive attitude.

Summary: Poems about Diego Rivera's childhood in free verse and non rhyming form are of the talented artist who received a scholarship to study art at a young age. His life and women he encountered had an impact on his success as an artist, including the revered Artist Frida Kahlo.
Response: Insightful information about Diego Rivera is great for an older reader doing research of artists or painter biographies.

Ryan, P. M. and Sis, P. (2010). The Dreamer. New York, NY: Scholastic Press.
Summary: Fiction, magical realism, poetry, underlying metaphors, and Spanish words intermingled within the text, a young boy tries to find his purpose and way in the world, what he wants to do when he gets older and to stand up for what he feels is right.
Response: Lost in the words, but equally appealing is the ending of the book and feeling the perseverance and dedication the poet had to the cause.

Summary: Experience a new fiction rhyming book for young readers about Halloween and enjoy a short tale of how monsters are horrified by children on the Halloween night. The use of both English and Spanish helps the children understand the meanings of the words in context.
Response: The smokey illustrations add to the mysterious day of Halloween and the surprise guests at the end of the book.

Summary: Father and son have a family filled day using Spanish and English in this realistic fictional picture book. Enjoying a day together on their way to visit grandparents and enjoy a special moment time. The wonderful illustrations by Rudy Gutierrez are vibrant and very fluid as they fill the pages.
Response: There is a lot to do on the way to visiting family. I liked the the curved lines in the illustrations and how they blended smoothly

2011 Pura Belpré Illustrators Award
Summary: Eric's biographical memoir of a time with his grandmother, going to the market to get supplies for pasteles, plus an incredible gift from his grandmother of sketchbook and colored pencils.. Illustrations done by Eric are a tribute to his trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on an assignment from his teacher. Luckily, his grandmother was able to take him there which made for a lasting impression on the young Eric.
Response: Learning from our grandparents adds many beautiful memories. Being able to communicate in a mulitcultual world can be even harder, but if we all try to learn from one another, we will also make lasting memories with our loved ones.

Tonatiuh, D. (2014). Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez & Her Family Fight for Desegregation. New York, NY: Abrams Books.
Summary: Sylvia Mendez recalls and event that happened as she was growing up and reminded her of her families struggles of having a desegregated life. Her parents fought for desegregation . Over time all children were allowed to attend schools no matter their sex, race, economics, etc.
Response: Many families in those times drank from separate water fountains, used separate toilets, lunch lines, and materials, my family included. I am so glad for more desegregated times.

Summary: Heartfelt free verse poems as the author shares memories of her life. Encased in the poem are a blend of the English language and Spanish text. The pages reveal a story of the author's mother dealing with cancer and the procedures her mother endures while Lupita goes through the motions of childhood, young adult, to lady and off to college.
Response: Reliving moments such as these must be hard and many people are living these experiences today.

Medina, M. and Dominquez, A. (2015). Mango, Abuela, and Me. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press.
Summary: A granddaughter and Abuela have a hard time communicating after the grandmother moves in. The young girl comes up with an excellent idea of using strategies to help Abuela communicate in English by using word cards and a parrot.
Response: I wish I thought of those strategies when I had my grandmother live with us! This juvenile fiction book is geared towards young readers.
2014 Pura Belpré Award Book for Illustration
Morales, Yuyi. (2013). Nino Wrestles the World. New York, NY: Roaring Brook Press.
Summary: Action packed children's book blending Spanish words with English onomatopoeias. Excellent use of a variety of fonts. The illustrations by Yuyi Morales are so bold and full of color, makes you want to read this book over and over again!
Response: Learning a bit of Spanish culture is well blended in the pages and makes you want to look up the characters to learn a little more about who Nino is challenging.
