Summary: Magnificent and colorful illustrations cover the pages of Misty Copeland's experiences as a ballerina. A young girl looks to Copeland for encouragement and guidance as she embarks in the training to become an accomplished dancer.
Response: I loved the story line and the illustrations were captivating. Children will be engaged as they read the book with the vibrant colors throughout the pages of this children's literature book.

Summary: Ellen was a little girl who learned about traditions in Reconstruction times. Symbolism fills the pages for young readers with talks about freedom, past days of weddings, and married family status among African Americans.
Response: Sharing the culture and history of the early days in African American history helps us to be more empathetic towards diversity and the struggles many had to endure during those days.

Response: I am reminded of my own parents account of the early days of the 1900's and how families were treated. Hispanics suffered too. You can feel the tension between the lines written in this book.

Summary: Biography of Bass Reeves, a former slave from Texas. As a run away slave, Bass learned the ways of the land and also rounded up outlaws as part of his civic duties. When you live your life right, according to the laws, you have nothing to fear. If you had a warrant against you, Bass Reeves would track every move you made, he would be sure to find you.
Response: I would recommend reading more nonfiction books to get the bigger picture of the lives of African Americans and their roles in law enforcement.

Summary: A French West Indies Folklore recreated about a couple about to be married soon. Zombie characters appear to intend to do harm to Clement and Pauline. Hippolyte tries to protect the friend and ends up turning to stone. Being a good true friend has rewards in the end including your friends knowing you are a loyal person.
Response: Magic and creativity putting together a well illustrated children's book showed great teamwork and craftsmanship between San Souci and Pinkney.

Summary: Tar beach was the top of a roof top, and Cassie Louise Lightfoot could only dream of flying high above the George Washington Bridge in 1931. Feeling free and not have to worry about anything but just being a child and loving life from her point of view.
Response: Think about civil situations happening during that time. Staying high above the world below was safe and being close to family brought on beautiful memories and dreams.

Summary: African folktale of two sisters who had very different personalities. One day they were told by their father to go to the king to be chosen as a bride. One daughter had a bad temper and set out to go alone. The other daughter set out afterward and kindly went towards a creature, only to find her friend to be the king in disguise.
Response: Interesting to see how the story finished and theme of being humble and kind will lead you to great riches in the future.

Summary: Tanya worked with Grandma to make her masterpiece of a quilt. Even thought Grandma couldn't finish the quilt all by herself, her family all pitched in to help with completing it. The last finishing touches Grandma was able to complete the quilt after having to take a rest break . In the end Tanya was given the quilt of patches of clothes with fabric of event or memories past.
Response: This realistic fiction story reminds us that family crafts mean so much to those involved and creates memories that will last a lifetime.
