Summary:  Basketball is the name of this game.  Written in free verse poems and pages filled with conversations between Josh and his twin brother Jordan.  Life and relationships are a central part of this book.  Sports fans will also find a connection to the author as the reader passes through the text.

Response:  The creative poems told so much personal information in each poem to keep going even in difficult times.  The text is sure to catch young adult readers attention.

Summary:  Jackson is a young boy who is living a life of transitions and homelessness.  With a positive attitude and his imaginary friend, Crenshaw, Jackson has an outlet for his worries and frustrations.  Realistic fiction young readers would get a glimpse of what homelessness is but this is only scenario.

Response:  If only more students had imaginary friends to lead children from right and wrong or to help them figure out life altogether.

El Deafo

Bell, C.  (2014).  El Deafo.  New York, NY:  Amulet Books.

Summary:  Cece has a hearing problem after a short battle with meningitis.  She learns that she has difficulty and gets help from a special school.. She moves to a public school and each day is a new adventure with the new hearing aid devices.  Lessons learned and modifications adjustments throughout her elementary years. She accepts and works through her difficulties and overcomes many obstacles.

Response:  Great book for teaching children how to understand what other children with hearing difficulties go through .  How I wish I had read this book early in my education career.

How They Croaked:  The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous

Summary:  Older readers who want to change from traditional literature will find this book informative with biographies of the lives of the rich and famous.  How they became deceased interesting facts of nineteen individuals biographical facts and their contributions to society.

Response:  Humorous and a change from everyday traditional literature.  Famous people and all the guts and glory makes for an interesting book.

Dear Mr. Henshaw

Summary:  A Newberry Medal winner where letters to Mr. Henshaw, an author, help a young boy go through personal events of his parent's divorcing.  Leigh Botts gets caught up in trying to figure out the "why".  Leigh is also being a detective of the "lunchbag bandit" by rigging up a device to catch the culprit.  Leigh finally gets closer to dealing with his emotions after his father comes to visit.  

Response:  Many children try to get help from outside resources.  Reaching out to an author of favorite books was one avenue Leigh took and it helped him.  Enjoyed reading this book and hope to read many more.
