Curtis, C.P.   (1995).  The Watsons Go To Birmingham.  New York, NY:  DeLaCorte Press.

Summary:  Kenny is a young boy watching life happen through the actions of his older brother Byron.  Decisions have to be made about a visit to Birmingham, Alabama to visit their grandmither Sans.  After some time there, difficult events happen that make Kenny wonder about why people do harmful things to other people, which gets directly related to civil rights.

Response:  Making it through the beginnings of the civil rights movement must have been scary and frustrating at the same time.  I'm glad to read that the characters in the book were unharmed and move forward with their lives.

Last Stop on Market Street

De La Pena, M.  (2015).  Last Stop on Market Street.  New York, NY:  G.P. Putnam's Sons.

Summary:  CJ experiences the local area through his Nana.  The sights and sounds, plus smells intrigue CJ  to ask questions along their journey to the "Last stop on Market Street".  Each person they encounter and talk to seems to have a story that can be found in the "beautiful" of every day.

Response:  Reading this young reader book, reminds me of an allegory with each passing comment Nana makes, one should appreciate what you have today because it may not be there tomorrow.  Basic needs and wants aren't necessarily a necessity and to find "beauty" in every thing possible.

Response:  Older readers may enjoy the text of the book and younger readers will need to have some discussion along the way as a read aloud.  Uniquely written and is a favorite among states with bluebonnets.

Karen Laughlin created a wonderful read aloud:

Response:   This is a great book to help others realize that people who may not be able to "talk" can truly hear us and can communicate if they only have the right tools to do so.
